Castillo Engineering, headquartered in Florida, is providing design and engineering services for two Montante Solar’s landfill solar projects in Niagara, New York. Developed by Calibrant Energy, these two projects have a combined capacity of 13 MW and are currently under construction. The installations use ballasted, fixed-tilt mounting systems to protect the landfill cap while optimizing site efficiency. Landfill solar projects in the US have increased by 80% over five years, with New York leading in installed community solar capacity. Four states New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, account for 70% of all utility-scale landfill solar installations, totaling approximately 2.4 GW. With 10,000 closed landfills US-wide, total landfill solar capacity could increase by at least 25 times.
