Philippines-based Carmen Copper Corporation has launched the Philippines’ first operating megawatt-scale floating solar power facility at the Malubog Reservoir within its Toledo City mine site. The 3-hectare plant contains 8,540 floating panels and generates up to 4.99 MW of electricity, supplying 10% of the site’s power demand. The system was designed and built by Black & Veatch and is scalable to 50 MW. Carmen Copper has also constructed a prefabricated substation and a 6-kilometer overhead distribution line connecting the array to its 34.5 kV substation. Construction was completed in 15 months with over 250,000 man-hours and no lost-time injuries. As per Carmen Copper, the project aligns with national renewable energy goals and is part of the company’s effort to reduce the carbon footprint of its mining operations.
