Switzerland-based Axpo has announced the approval of the NalpSolar alpine solar plant in Graubünden, Switzerland. The plant will have an installed capacity of 8 MW. It will be built in Tujetsch near the Lai da Nalpsreservoir at 2,000 meters above sea level. Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has committed to purchasing the electricity for 20 years. Construction is set to begin in March 2025, depending on weather conditions. 10% of the installation is planned to be connected to the grid by the end of 2025, with full completion in subsequent summer months. It is expected to generate 11 GWh of electricity each year. The electricity will be enough to supply over 2,000 households. The project is part of the federal Solar Express initiative and aligns with Axpo’s renewable energy strategy to enhance electricity generation, particularly in winter. It aims to study the feasibility of large-scale solar installations in alpine conditions.
