The project is estimated to reduce coal use by 560,000 tons and cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 1.5 million tons each year. Image Source: Astronergy
Astronergy, headquartered in China, has supplied 417 MW of its ASTRO N5 modules to a 1 GW “Solar Thermal + PV” power plant, developed by the state-owned Three Gorges Corporation. The project marks the first large-scale use of “Linear Fresnel” technology (uses flat mirrors to focus sunlight onto a fixed receiver, generating heat for power production) in the country. The project spans 800,000 sqm and combines 900 MW of PV generation with 100 MW of molten salt thermal storage, capable of storing heat for up to 8 hours to allow continuous clean energy generation. The plant was officially connected to the grid in December 2024. It is aimed to produce 1.86 billion kWh of clean electricity each year, sufficient to meet the energy needs of approximately 800,000 households.
