UK’s Port Operator, Associated British Ports (ABP) has submitted a planning application for Barrow EnergyDock, the UK's largest floating solar project, at Cavendish Dock. The floating solar array will cover one-third of the dock’s water area and include around 47,000 panels with a capacity of up to 40MW, enough to power about 14,000 homes annually. The project is part of ABP’s Port of Barrow Masterplan, which aims to support economic growth in response to regional investments. The energy will mainly support Barrow’s engineering sector and help manage electricity costs at the port. ABP worked with Green Cat Renewables on the planning application and held public consultations last autumn. Environmental assessments by ABPmer found no major ecological impacts. The floating design saves port land for operations and supports jobs while adding renewable energy to the port’s infrastructure.
