American Farmland Trust (AFT), headquartered in DC, and Sol Systems, based in DC, have launched an agrivoltaics initiative in Illinois. The project integrates solar energy production with Kernza grain cultivation at the Eldorado Phase II solar site. Kernza is a perennial grain developed by The Land Institute. This variety has deep roots exceeding 10 feet and is expected to improve soil health, water retention, and carbon sequestration when cultivated. The initiative aims to assess the technical feasibility, soil and water benefits, and economic impacts of agrivoltaics. Over four years, researchers, farmers, and solar developers will monitor grain and forage production under solar panels. AFT will oversee farmer relationships, grain cultivation, and connections with processors and end-users.
