Africa REN has commissioned Senegal’s first solar-plus-storage facility, the Walo Storage project, in Bokhol, northern Senegal. The porfolio integrates a 16 MW solar power system with a 10 MW / 20 MWh battery storage unit, making it West Africa’s first such facility dedicated to frequency regulation. Officially entering commercial operation on July 14, 2025, it is connected to the national grid operated by Senelec to enhance grid reliability, support peak demand, and provide backup during outages. The €40 million (~ $46.6 million) project was financed through equity from Africa REN’s shareholders, including FMO and Metier Sustainable Capital International Fund II LLP, and debt from FMO and the Emerging Africa & Asia Infrastructure Fund under PIDG. According to Africa REN, the project marks a major milestone toward its target of building €500 million in sustainable assets by 2030.
