Japan is investing in flexible perovskite solar panels to meet its 2040 renewable energy targets and reduce reliance on China, which controls most of the global solar supply chain. The government has allocated ¥157 billion (~ $1 billion) to Sekisui Chemical for a facility expected to produce 100 MW of panels by 2027. As per the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the panels’ light and adaptable form makes them suitable for installation in mountainous areas. Panasonic is working on integrating perovskite films into windowpanes for localized electricity generation. Perovskite panels are already being used in projects in Tokyo and Fukuoka. Although the technology faces issues such as shorter lifespans and lead content, the government considers domestic production necessary for energy and economic stability.
