Ascent Solar Technologies, based in Thornton, Colorado, develops lightweight CIGS thin-film modules for space and beamed power use. According to the company, it delivered both commercial and application-specific prototypes to several third parties within a month of request. A potential customer focused on beamed power applications has issued a follow-up order to revise the design. Ascent Solar said that test data confirmed strong thermal performance and showed potential for higher output with design modifications. Design work to enhance the prototype is currently underway. The company stated that its 5 MW facility in Colorado enables rapid prototyping and customized production for unique operational needs. Unlike silicon-based providers, Ascent Solar uses a flexible CIGS process to tailor modules for specific use cases.
