Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER), based in Tokyo, has invested in Massachusetts startup Active Surfaces, Inc., which develops flexible perovskite solar modules derived from MIT research. Founded in 2022, Active Surfaces has created ultralight, peel-and-stick solar films that can be applied to roofs, walls and curved surfaces, reducing installation costs by up to tenfold. The technology, certified by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has achieved 25.2% efficiency and durability exceeding ten years. Its high-speed roll-to-roll manufacturing process uses automated, low-labor lines and proprietary encapsulation to improve uniformity and prevent degradation. Through this investment, J-POWER and Active Surfaces have planned pilot tests and identified new business opportunities for perovskite solar applications across diverse installation environments.
