Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, has commissioned a 17.4 MW photovoltaic system installed along Runway 18 West. The setup comprised 37,000 vertically aligned modules expected to generate about 17.4 million kWh of electricity annually, supplying power for terminal air conditioning and the airport’s electric vehicle fleet. The facility was jointly inaugurated by Hessian Minister Kaweh Mansoori and Fraport CEO Dr. Stefan Schulte. According to Fraport, the system marked progress toward its Net Zero target for 2045, supported by renewable energy sources and a Power Purchase Agreement with EnBW beginning in 2026. The vertical solar fences, developed after a 2022 trial, allowed biodiversity to be preserved by permitting sunlight and rainfall to reach the ground. Combined with existing rooftop systems, the east-west-facing installation improved daily energy stability across the airport.
