Ember’s Global Electricity Mid-Year Insights 2025 reported that solar and wind generation outpaced global electricity demand growth in the first half of 2025, marking the first time renewables surpassed coal in the global mix. Electricity demand rose 2.6% (+369 TWh), while solar grew 31% (+306 TWh) and wind 7.7% (+97 TWh), together adding 363 TWh and raising renewables’ share to 34.3%. Coal’s share fell to 33.1% following a 0.6% decline in generation. China accounted for 55% of solar and 82% of wind growth, with further contributions from the United States, EU, India, and Brazil. Power-sector emissions plateaued at 6,963 MtCO₂, declining in China and India but rising in the United States and EU. Global solar capacity additions reached a record 380 GW, 64% higher year-on-year, bringing solar’s generation share to 8.8% as 29 countries exceeded 10%.
