India-based Tata Power Company Ltd (Tata Power) has partnered with Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC), the country's sole power generation utility, to develop 5 GW of renewable energy in Bhutan. The agreement, signed in Thimphu, supports Bhutan's target of 25,000 MW capacity by 2040. The initiative marks a shift from hydropower to solar and geothermal energy. The collaboration will see phased development of 4,500 MW in hydropower, including projects like the 1.125 GW Dorjilung, 740 MW Gongri Reservoir, 1.8 GW Jeri Pumped Storage, and 364 MW Chamkharchhu IV. Additionally, Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) will oversee 500 MW in solar PV projects.
