At the foot of Sophienhöhe hill in the Hambach opencast mine, RWE has fully commissioned a new PV plant with integrated battery storage. This plant will generate green energy until Hambach Lake is filled in about 40 years. The RWE Neuland Solar Farm has a capacity of 12 MW (8.4 MWac) and its 22,000 bifacial solar modules can power over 3,100 households. The battery system supports a two-hour charging cycle of over 8 MWh. Next to this, the RWE Neuland 1 Solar Farm is under construction, with 36,700 modules and a planned capacity of 35.2 MW. A third solar farm is in planning. RWE plans to operate these with NeulandHambach GmbH, which is coordinating structural changes around the mine.
