IIT Bombay and ART-PV India Pvt Ltd, backed by the Maharashtra government, are in the process of developing a tandem solar cell technology. The goal is to achieve a commercial wafer-scale version by December 2027. The cell has achieved a power conversion efficiency of about 30%, which is in contrast with the current average of about 20%. This is a 25% to 30% improvement upon the current technologies. The expected price of solar electricity generated by this technology stands at ₹1 per kWh, whereas present prices vary between ₹2.5 and ₹4 per unit. It is a part of continuous technological research aimed at altering the performance of solar cells as well as looking for alternative means to reduce the cost of electricity.
