The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), a nonprofit environmental legal organization headquartered in Virginia, along with an alliance of legal groups, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s termination of the $7 billion Solar for All initiative. The coalition includes Lawyers for Good Government, Conservation Law Foundation, and the Lawyers Committee for Rhode Island. The program, administered by the US Environmental Protection Agency, had awarded 2024 grants aimed at lowering energy bills for more than 900,000 low-income households nationwide. Nearly $1 billion of those funds were allocated to SELC’s six-state region to support community and rooftop solar installations, workforce training, and power purchase programs. Plaintiffs also include the Rhode Island AFL-CIO and Solar United Neighbors, which lost opportunities to expand clean energy employment and resilience projects. SELC claims the suit will reinstate congressional intent and provide equitable access to affordable solar power for disadvantaged communities in the US.
