The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY), which the Government of India introduced in February 2024, seeks to supply as much as 300 units of free power a month to 10 million families using rooftop solar systems. The scheme, undertaken by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), hopes to be completed by FY27 but has seen varied progress from state to state. As per MNRE, Gujarat and Kerala have picked up pace in domestic installations, whereas the rest of the states have been behind in implementation and beneficiary registration. The scheme was launched to augment self-generation of electricity at the consumer level as well as shore up India's rooftop solar power base. Yet, after 20 months, implementation has been incremental, pointing to regional gaps in uptake and administrative preparedness.
