The Government of Kerala, which oversees state energy planning in India, has released the draft Kerala Energy Policy 2025 with new solar mandates. As per the draft, households using over 500 units monthly and having 100 sq mts rooftop space must install at least 1 kW solar systems. For commercial users, the requirement is 3 kW, increasing to 5 kW for rooftops over 400 sq mts. According to the policy, building regulations should be amended and incentives offered to support implementation. It also mandates electric vehicle charging points in all urban buildings. The draft said that shared solar systems may be developed by residents’ associations, with credits distributed proportionally. Non-residential consumers are encouraged to adopt renewables to reduce electricity bills.
