The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), which is based in New Delhi and governs India's renewable energy policies, has published an updated Solar PV Potential Assessment Report. The report has estimated 3,343 GW of feasible ground-mounted capacity in India, marking a sharp rise from the 2014 projection. The research was carried out by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), Gurugram-based and acting as a research and training institution, jointly with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), that used high-resolution geospatial techniques such as land use, shading, and proximity to infrastructure. The new estimate has revealed a steep rise compared to the 2014 estimate of 749 GW and identifies solar potential beyond Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. As per MNRE, the results are meant to inform project location, grid capacity development, and private sector investments, while ensuring national goals of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070. Alongside the report, MNRE inaugurated the first solar cell and module manufacturing training program at NISE with international participation.
