India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), a government agency overseeing renewable policy, has proposed a dedicated import monitoring system for solar energy equipment to the Ministry of Commerce, according to Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi. The system is designed to track the origin, content, and compliance of imports with harmonised system codes and is expected to receive approval shortly. Under the plan, importers may be required to provide advance information, submit online applications, and obtain automatic registration numbers before customs clearance. This mechanism follows procedures already in place for imports of steel and paper. The monitoring framework is designed to complement the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). Solar cells will be included in the ALMM from June 2026, with later expansion to ingots, wafers, and polysilicon. MNRE reported that India’s module capacity has surpassed 100 GW, while cell capacity has reached 27 GW.
