China has released draft energy standards that require polysilicon producers to comply with stricter consumption thresholds or face closure of their facilities. The new framework has set a baseline of 6.4 kgce per kilogram of polysilicon, with a more stringent level of 5.5 kgce per kilogram to apply after upgrades are completed. Plants that are unable to comply within the mandated timeframe will be compelled to cease operations. The Silicon Industry of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, a Beijing-based trade organization, has reported that effective production capacity could decline to 2.4 million metric tons annually, marking a 16.4% reduction compared with the level recorded at the end of 2024. The association has further stated that such a decline would contribute to rebalancing supply and demand across the sector. The draft measures are currently open for public consultation and are scheduled to come into effect within the next 12 months.
