South Africa-based Pele Green Energy (PGE) has finalized the financial close and commenced operations of the 100 MW Sonvanger Solar PV Power Plant. The project is located 4 km southwest of Theunissen in the Free State province. According to PGE, the plant will supply renewable energy to Glencore Merafe Venture’s ferrochrome smelters. PGE emphasizes that this marks the first utility-scale solar project closed by a single sponsor and Independent Power Producer (IPP) in the country. The facility supports South Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national energy targets. Highlighting the role of IPPs, the project showcases partnerships between energy developers and industries as key to sustainable progress.
