Brazil-based Neoenergia Pernambuco has received authorization from the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) to expand renewable energy generation on Fernando de Noronha using solar & storage project. According to Neoenergia, the Noronha Verde project aims to achieve up to 85% decarbonization on the island, which currently depends on diesel power. This would make it the first inhabited island in Latin America to reach such a milestone. The initiative involves investments of BRL 300 million (~$60 million) and is projected to become operational by early 2027. Supported by the Federal Government, the State of Pernambuco, and environmental bodies such as CPRH and ICMBio, the project also seeks to reduce emissions and lower national energy subsidies through the Fuel Consumption Account (CCC).
