US-based Nautilus Solar Energy, in partnership with Walden Renewables, has completed a 7 MW community solar project on a remediated site in Sanford, Maine. This project transforms a former contaminated brownfield into a solar farm that provides clean energy to over 960 subscribers within the Central Maine Power utility area. It qualifies under Maine’s Net Energy Billing program, contributing to the state’s renewable energy targets of 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2050. The initiative also generates lease revenue for the City of Sanford and creates job opportunities, demonstrating how compromised land can be effectively repurposed for sustainable energy production.
