India added 11.3 GW of solar module capacity and 2 GW of solar cell capacity in the first half of 2024, as revealed by Mercom India’s report, State of Solar PV Manufacturing in India 1H 2024. This growth was primarily driven by strong demand and a robust solar project pipeline totaling 132.7 GW between 2024 and 2026, supported by the reimposition of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) order in April 2024. By June 2024, India’s cumulative solar module manufacturing capacity reached 77.2 GW, with ALMM certification covering around 51 GW of that capacity. The report also indicated a significant rise in solar module imports, up over 338% year-on-year, while solar cell imports grew by 152%. Domestic manufacturers exported over 3 GW of modules, and India’s solar cell exports nearly tripled year-on-year.
