sonnen, a Germany-based energy storage company, has launched Canada’s first residential VPP at Blatchford Lands in Edmonton. Developed with Landmark Homes, EPCOR, Solartility, and the University of Alberta, the project supports decentralized energy, grid stability, emergency backup, and peak demand management. The initial phase includes 100 sonnen batteries, providing 0.5 MW of power and over 2 MWh of storage for residential use. Blatchford Lands, a net-zero master-planned community built on a former airport site, integrates renewable energy solutions for heating, cooling, and electricity. According to sonnen, the VPP will expand to over 3,000 sites across Alberta and other Canadian regions within three years, delivering 18 MW of energy and 60 MWh of storage. Earlier this year, sonnen and SOLRITE Energy introduced a similar VPP program for residential communities in the Texas ERCOT market.
