SolarPower Europe, a Brussels-based solar industry association, has reported that solar became the EU’s top electricity source in June 2025, contributing 22.1%. The EU is likely to achieve its RePower 2025 target of 400 GW DC but should fall short of reaching 750 GW DC by 2030. Market growth was 3.3% in 2024 and is projected to contract by 1.4% in 2025, marking the first decline in a decade. SolarPower Europe has stated that rooftop solar installations have dropped as lower electricity prices and weak policies delayed household and SME investments. Residential solar’s share has fallen from 30% during 2020–2023 to 15% in 2025, as per SolarPower Europe’s assessment. Utility-scale solar has remained steady at 50%, though newly signed PPA volumes were 60% lower in Q2 2025. SolarPower Europe has noted that auctions have become increasingly important as pricing competition among developers has intensified across the region.
EU solar outlook shows slowdown despite utility-scale stability
Solar became the EU’s top power source in June 2025, but falling PPAs and reduced rooftop uptake slowed growth, SolarPower Europe stated in its mid-year outlook.
