A French multinational automotive manufacturer, Renault Group, MyWheels, We Drive Solar, and the Municipality of Utrecht launched Europe’s first large-scale Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) car-sharing service. The initiative aimed to manage grid fluctuations caused by high solar output in Utrecht, where 35% of rooftops have solar panels. It started with 50 Renault 5 E-Tech cars equipped with V2G technology developed by Mobilize. The cars were operated by MyWheels and charged through We Drive Solar’s bidirectional public infrastructure. The fleet is set to expand to 500 vehicles, expected to provide 10% of the flexibility needed for grid balancing in the region. Renault showcased similar V2G use cases in France. The company called for unified European regulations, fiscal incentives, and simplified certification processes. These measures are needed to enable broader V2G deployment. Technology offers key benefits such as grid stability, energy cost reduction, and improved EV ownership economics.
