German-based RENA Technologies GmbH, has identified widespread patent infringement involving its water cap technology for single-side etching in solar cell production. The patent is registered in the US, China, and India. Evidence from the US and India shows that several Chinese suppliers are building and distributing unlicensed systems using this method. These systems are used in PERC and TOPCon solar cell manufacturing. RENA holds global rights to the patent through a cross-licensing agreement with SCHMID. The company plans legal action, especially in the US and India. Solar cell manufacturers using unlicensed systems may also face legal consequences. Products made in violation of the patent risk global seizure. RENA has urged companies to avoid these risks by using licensed systems.
