NEXT Energy Technologies completed an upgrade of its pilot production line to manufacture 40” x 60” laminated transparent power-generating windows using its proprietary organic photovoltaic (OPV) coating. These were the largest transparent OPV windows produced globally, demonstrating the scalability of its automated slot-die coating process. The neutral grey OPV coating, designed for North American commercial facades, combined aesthetics, power generation, and manufacturability. Previously, the company had demonstrated 27” x 35” OPV windows. The larger format aimed to support sustainable building projects. NEXT planned demonstration installations with US and European partners while transitioning from pilot to production scale and obtaining UL certification for grid-connected projects. The OPV facades could generate onsite renewable power, offsetting 20%-25% of a building’s energy load, and reducing HVAC demands by absorbing and converting infrared light. The milestone indicated progress toward scaling production to 60” x 120” commercial windows.
