Australian-based company Lithium Universe Limited is focusing on silver recovery in its solar panel recycling program. It has licensed Macquarie University’s low-temperature Microwave Joule Heating Technology. A separate silver extraction method is pending patent approval. Each panel contains 20 grams of silver, valued at AUD 36. Global silver demand is growing, driven by solar and electronics. In 2025, demand is projected at 680 million ounces, with a 117.6-million-ounce shortfall. Silver prices have risen 126% since 2018. PV waste is projected to reach 60–78 million tons by 2050. Only 15% of solar panels are currently recycled. Lithium Universe plans to recover silicon, gallium and indium in later phases. These materials are needed to make chips and solar panels. But few countries produce them, so shortages are possible.
