Indian Railways, a government-owned national railway operator, has commissioned India’s first removable solar panel system at Banaras Locomotive Works in Varanasi. The pilot installation is on workshop line 19, where 28 solar panels were installed across 70 meters of railway track to generate 15 kW capacity. Indian Railways has stated that the panels are indigenously designed and can be removed for seasonal requirements or routine maintenance activities. Reported performance has shown a power density of 240 kWp per kilometer and an energy density of 960 kWh per kilometer per day. Each solar module is rated at 602 W with 20.15% efficiency and uses 144 half-cut mono PERC bifacial cells. Indian Railways has indicated that its 1.2 lakh kilometers of track, particularly yard lines, could generate 3.50 lakh kWh annually per kilometer without land acquisition.
