The Citizens Utility Board (CUB), a Chicago-based nonprofit that advocates for utility customers, has warned that Ameren Illinois will raise its electricity supply rate nearly 50% to 12 cents per kWh starting June 1, 2025. The new rate, which includes supply, transmission, and adjustment charges, is expected to increase summer bills by 18 to 22 percent. CUB has stated that the rise is due to MISO’s revised capacity pricing, which has raised reserve power costs, and delays in new power plant connections. While Ameren Illinois has passed supply costs without profit, the financial gains are expected to benefit power generators. CUB has called for legislative backing of the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act and has urged consumers to reduce usage, consider battery storage, and apply for programs such as LIHEAP, Peak Time Rewards, and community solar.
