Vatican City-headquartered Holy See and Italian Government has signed a bilateral agreement at Palazzo Borromeo. Msgr. Gallagher and Ambassador Francesco Di Nitto signed the agreement on behalf of both parties. It approved the construction of an agrivoltaic system in Santa Maria di Galeria. The system is planned on land owned by the Holy See. It is expected to supply renewable electricity to Vatican City. Any surplus electricity will remain available to Italy, including for social uses. The agreement extended Lateran Treaty provisions to cover renewable energy generation. Both nations are parties to the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement. They have recognized the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project was supported by Italy and endorsed by Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV. It added a new sector to the long-standing bilateral cooperation.
