According to Ember's research, the Paris Agreement has accelerated solar power as the quickest-expanding electricity source globally. Generation has risen tenfold from 1% in 2015 to 6.9% in 2024 and 8.8% in the first half of 2025. Emerging economies now contribute over half of solar output, up from under a quarter, as mature markets' portion fell from three-quarters. In Brazil, solar capacity has expanded 70% yearly to 62 GW by September 2025, providing 12% of electricity in the first three quarters. This has outpaced nuclear, coal, gas, and bioenergy, also reducing reliance on 90% hydro via auctions and distributed generation.
Emerging economies lead solar boom from Paris pact
The Paris Agreement has driven PV surges in emerging economies like Brazil, India, and China, with Ember noting up to 70% annual capacity growth and energy diversification.
