UK-based Ember, a global energy think tank, reported solar was the EU’s top electricity source in June 2025 with a record 22.1% share. Thirteen countries saw peak solar output, led by the Netherlands at 40.5% and Greece at 35.1%. Wind generation also set May and June records at 16.6% and 15.8%. Coal’s share dropped to an all-time monthly low of 6.1%, down from 8.8% in June 2024. Germany and Poland, the top coal users, recorded 12.4% and 42.9% respectively. Czechia, Bulgaria, Denmark, and Spain also posted record coal lows. Ten countries had no coal generation. Ireland shut its last coal plant on 20 June. Spain and Slovakia have set phase-out dates for later in 2025. The shift is tied to new solar capacity and favourable summer weather conditions. In the same context, Ember has also explored how energy storage could enable round-the-clock solar coverage across Europe, aligning with recent output peaks.
