Ember, a UK-based energy think tank, has reported record solar generation in Britain during the first half of 2025. Solar output rose by one-third to 9.91 TWh, breaking monthly records for five consecutive months since March. This record solar generation has balanced lower wind speeds and reduced gas reliance. Gas output fell to record lows in May and June, dropping to 21% of electricity supply in June. However, overall gas use was 5.7 TWh higher than 2024 due to reduced imports and weaker early wind generation. Wind and solar together have shown seasonal balance, with low wind often matched by high solar output. Ember noted that clean flexibility tools, including energy storage, are required to manage rare multi-day periods of low renewable generation.Earlier, Ember reported a 60% rise in Africa’s solar imports from China, highlighting similar trends of rapid solar growth across regions.
