BB Energy, a global energy trading company, has commissioned the 25 MW Mailo Phase 1 solar plant in Zambia. This is its first renewable energy project and marks its debut in power trading via Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). The plant was developed, funded, and built in under a year.It will deliver over 60 GWh annually, power 25,000 homes, and offset 60,000 tons of CO₂ per year. A $40 million loan from Standard Bank has funded Mailo Phase 2, now under construction. The project is expected to expand to 118 MW by 2027. Mailo is the first merchant solar plant trading on the SAPP platform. It has created 400 jobs and includes financial agreements with the local community. BB Energy plans to scale a 500 MW merchant solar portfolio across southern Africa with support from Solarcentury Africa.
