Doral Renewables, a US-based utility-scale solar and storage developer with operations in 22 states, has partnered with American Farmland Trust in June 2025. American Farmland Trust, a Washington D.C.-based non-profit focused on farmland preservation, said that it will guide Doral Renewables on applying Smart Solar principles and community engagement strategies. The Smart Solar framework promotes agrivoltaics, allowing agricultural production and solar development to coexist while supporting biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and water quality. According to American Farmland Trust, over 80% of solar development by 2050 is expected to occur on farmland. Doral Renewables has secured over $2.5 billion in long-term PPAs and plans to apply agrivoltaic practices across its 18 GW development pipeline. Since 1980, American Farmland Trust has protected 6.8 million acres of farmland and supported policies advancing sustainable agriculture.
