1KOMMA5°, a Hamburg-based energy company, has been operating a 500 MW decentralized virtual power plant across Europe using its Heartbeat AI platform. The system currently manages 50,000 residential units, including EV chargers, batteries, air conditioners, and heat pumps, with 300,000 controllable devices installed. Heartbeat AI executes over 4.8 million automated load adjustments daily by responding to real-time market signals and grid conditions. According to 1KOMMA5°, the VPP helps reduce curtailment losses and electricity costs for households through intelligent load shifting. The company aims to scale the platform to 20 GW and reach 16 million German homes by 2030. 1KOMMA5° has added cooling system integration and PowerHarvester to enable energy participation from non-solar-equipped households.
