US headquartered LRE (Leeward Renewable Energy) has completed and commenced commercial operations of its 200 MW Morrow Lake Solar project in Frio County, Texas. Under a long-term power purchase agreement, the project will supply renewable energy to Microsoft Corp. Morrow Lake Solar is the first of two solar facilities developed as part of the agreement with Microsoft and is situated near LRE’s existing 200 MW Horizon Solar project in the same county. During its peak construction, the project generated over 300 jobs, including 112 local hires. It uses First Solar’s thin-film photovoltaic modules and incorporates practices to support land stewardship, such as enhancing biodiversity and utilizing sheep grazing for vegetation management. LRE acquired the project in 2023 from Red River, a joint venture of SunChase and Eolian, which began its development in 2017.
