Telangana government, an India-based state authority overseeing public energy programmes, has proposed rooftop PV installations for 20 lakh poor households under an INR 24,000 crore programme. The state government has requested INR 12,000 crore subsidy support from the Union government under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. According to the proposal, each household system would have a 2 kW rooftop PV installation costing about INR 1.20 lakh per house. Of this amount, INR 60,000 would be provided as subsidy to solar companies installing systems across the targeted households. The remaining INR 12,000 crore funding requirement would be arranged through loans if MNRE permits subsidy transfers to companies implementing installations. Telangana energy department has already started pilot rooftop PV installations on about 40,000 houses with private companies. If implemented, rooftop systems across 20 lakh houses could generate around 1.60 crore kWh daily for grid supply.
