India-based Tangedco has planned to install rooftop solar systems generating 27 MW in Madurai district by 2027, said Superintending Engineer R. Regina Rajakumari. She stated that 70,000 of the six lakh domestic consumers in the district, who used 500 to 1,000 units per billing cycle, were identified as beneficiaries. Consumers installing solar systems of up to 3 KW could receive a subsidy of up to INR78,000, said Executive Engineer Bala Parameswari. Rajakumari added that rooftop solar was already generating 1 MW in the district and more awareness programs would follow. She said the initiative would reduce power bills for consumers and ease Tangedco’s demand pressure. Union Bank of India’s branch manager Sampath Kumar announced 10-year loans at 6% interest to support installations, ensuring financial accessibility for middle-class households.
