The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India’s central authority for renewable energy policy, has reported slower rooftop PV deployment nationwide. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy programme launched in February 2024 has covered up to 40% installation costs to support residential rooftop solar installations nationwide. Residential rooftop installations have reached 2.36 million while the ministry has targeted deployment of 4 million systems. According to government data roughly three in five applications remain unapproved and about 7% were rejected. Under the scheme vendors arrange bank financing before installations and submit proof for subsidy credits. Banks have stated stricter documentation checks were necessary to safeguard public funds and reduce loan risks. Officials have introduced co-applicant provisions and simplified documentation requirements to address ownership disputes. The ministry has said the programme has benefited over 3 million households despite pending approvals and delays.
