The National Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has planned a 1,342 MW floating solar project covering 4,091 hectares of the Jayakwadi dam in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The project was approved by the State Board for Wildlife in April and later by the Ministry of Environment’s expert committee in September. Jayakwadi, has declared a bird sanctuary in 1986, is home to 269 bird species, including migratory ducks, cranes, and flamingos. Environmentalists Dr. Dilip Yardi, Dr. Kishor Pathak, and Kunal Vibhandik opposed the project, warning of threats to bird habitats, fish breeding, and aquatic vegetation. Concerns were raised about reduced sunlight, algae loss, and transmission line hazards. Officials said only 12 percent of the reservoir will be used, with safeguards planned. Conservation groups such as BNHS recommended underground power lines to reduce bird collision risks.
