The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is planning to achieve financial self-reliance by developing solar energy projects across its properties. The initiative includes installing solar panels on open spaces, rooftops of workshops, and bus stations to generate about 300 MW of electricity annually. According to chairman Pratap Sarnaik, MSRTC has prepared a roadmap to produce power worth INR 1,000 crore (~$ 112.7 million) each year. Currently, the corporation uses 15 MW of electricity annually, paying INR 25–30 crore (~$ 2.81 – 3.38 million) to the power distributor. With the growing fleet of electric buses, the demand is expected to reach 300 MW. Officials said solar generation could save around INR 1,000 crore annually. Projects will be implemented through public-private partnerships, using government land when required, and supported by financial assistance from state and central schemes.
