Karnataka has completed a 200 MW solar generation capacity under the Kusum-C scheme and is preparing to add another 545 MW across 93 identified locations. The Kusum-C program is designed to solarise agricultural feeders and provide consistent daytime electricity for irrigation pumpsets across the state. According to the Karnataka Energy Department, each MW of solar capacity installed under the scheme has required 4 acres of land. While government land is allocated at no cost, private developers are required to pay ₹25,000(~ $300) per acre as a lease, with the amount deposited with the district commissioner and used to upgrade government schools and anganwadicenters in the surrounding areas. The scheme also includes provisions for pumpsets based on their distance from feeders—pumps within 500 metres are connected through solar feeders, while those located beyond that range are covered under the Kusum-B scheme using standalone solar pump installations.
