Global Carbon Council, a Qatar-based carbon standard organization, and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), an India-based sustainable development research institute, have signed a memorandum of understanding. The agreement has established India’s first digital carbon marketplace supporting household and livelihood-based clean energy projects under TERI’s Lighting a Billion Livelihoods (LaBL) 2.0 programme. The digital platform has linked distributed renewable energy solutions including solar lighting, clean cooking technologies and productive-use appliances, with international carbon markets. The system has aggregated household and small-business energy interventions using digital monitoring, reporting and verification frameworks to generate verified carbon credits. The collaboration has also explored integration of LaBL 2.0 projects with the World Bank supported ASCENT Energy Access Portal. TERI has served as the national focal point for the Energy Access Program in India while engaging institutions on Article 6.2 carbon markets, which allow countries to trade internationally transferred mitigation outcomes (ITMOs) under the Paris Agreement.
