Uttar Pradesh has achieved 800 MW of rooftop solar capacity as of September 2025 under the National Energy Development Agency, progressing toward its 1,000 MW target by year-end through the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The state has installed over 2.39 lakh systems, adding 31,482 in September alone, generating over 100 MW in a month. Officials said rooftop solar helps optimize limited land, unlike Rajasthan’s large ground projects. The program has attracted about INR 2,000 crore (~ $240 million) in public and private investment, created 95,000 jobs, and produced 150 million units of power annually, avoiding 60,000 tonnes of coal and 1.1 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The initiative also provided INR 2,067 crore (~ $248 million) in subsidies, saving consumers INR 200–250 crore (~ $24–30 million) annually and making Uttar Pradesh India’s top state for rooftop solar applications.
