Coal India, the world’s largest coal producer, invited bids for 5 GW of renewable projects, including 3 GW solar and 2 GW wind, with a September 16 submission deadline. The state-owned miner faced slowing coal demand and rising competition from renewable power producers. It supplied about 75% of India’s coal in the year through March 2025 but saw its market share decline in recent years. The company doubled its renewable targets in the past year, aiming for 9.5 GW by March 2030, compared with 209 MW existing solar capacity. Its annual report noted concerns over long-term coal demand as renewables, storage, and smart grids advanced.
